Human Rights News Article 1 - My Friend Cayla: the doll for children accused of 'illegal espionage'
Discussion Questions:
The internet is being used more in society from all ages. Should younger children be more wary of the dangers of the internet? Should companies be allowed to continue to make these types of products? Do you think this concern is necessary? Do you think product placement is immoral or unethical? |
Summary
This article addresses a concern about a doll that can be used to spy on conversations with children and families. It is sold around the world and is called ‘My Friend: Cayla.’ Cayla is equipped with a microphone, speakers and a Bluetooth connection to the internet, to answer any questions an individual asks. The doll is able to record and save conversations with no restrictions on the use or disclosure of the personal information. The collection of information is used to further improve the quality of the doll and third parties working under the voice recognition company of the doll: Nuance. Cayla is also installed with references to Disney, to develop her character. This claims to be product placement, and is believed to be unethical since parents are not informed about this feature. The problem about Cayla is, the Bluetooth connection is unsecured with no password, which leads to the possibility of hackers being able to to spy on families and children. According to Germany's Federal Network Agency, the hidden microphone is considered an “illegal espionage apparatus… and [they’re] urging parents to destroy or disable the toy” (Joseph 1). There have reports and complaints of Cayla being hacked and concerns over manufacturers selling information to “military, intelligence and law enforcement agencies” (Joseph 1). |
